We are seeking an experienced leader to join us as our day shift manager for our chemical processing work areas, located at the Aerojet Rocketdyne Canoga Park, CA (Los Angeles Area) site. The chemical processing areas are responsible for precision fine cleaning, and chemical plating of experimental, developmental, and production hardware and support tooling.

This position is a direct report to the Director, Strategic Fabrication Center.

This position may be filled at this level posted or one level higher.

Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each)

This position is responsible for directing the daily activities related to execution of all chemical processing work centers located at the Aerojet Rocketdyne, Canoga Park, CA (Los Angeles area) site. This management position is responsible for the performance of all hourly and salaried personnel in supporting all current and future program needs.

The types of processing and equipment utilized in the chemical processing / plating / cleaning of hardware includes (but not limited to) the following. Candidates should be comfortable operating within this type of work environment:

  • Use of borescopes to verify hardware cleanliness / FOD free per hardware specification.

  • Use ovens and other aids to process hardware per specification.

  • Operating processing controls and equipment to perform acid etching of weld joints, electro-chem etching of hardware, passivating, degreasing or stripping parts and assemblies to assure proper processing per specified requirements.

  • Properly masking of hardware to ensure paint or dry film lube is applied to proper areas only.

  • Operation of automatic conveyors and various types of paint/ DFL spraying equipment to apply coatings per specification.

  • Hardware is cleaned in tanks, high pressure steam cleaned, hand-wiped, parts washer, fine clean wet cells, and in precision clean rooms.

  • Coordinated lifting operations of rocket engine hardware (up to 5,000 lbs)

All technicians and salaried operations technical support will report directly to the manager. In addition, in-process quality inspection hourly personnel will take daily direction from the manager as far as priority of work assignments, to ensure timely work center execution.

This manager is also responsible for leading the production control team of material handling / expediters to ensure timely and safe movement of hardware between all work areas within the factory, including the use of motorized pallet jackets / forklifts.

Job Breakdown:

25% - managing direct labor charging to ensure regulatory compliance managing work assignments to maximize the utilization of resources, meet delivery requirements, and achieve efficiency targets maintaining employee training, certifications, and critical skills analyzing cost & quality drivers to identify cause(s) and implement corrective actions

30% - directing daily work assignments within the work centers to meet quality, cost, and schedule commitments, leading cross-functional team members to interpret hardware processing requirements, coordinating technical support to ensure hardware velocity and maintaining tooling and work center readiness (calibration, preventative maintenance plans)

15% - identifying, reporting, and eliminating unsafe acts & unsafe conditions within the work centers, leading relentless root cause analysis investigations while striving for mistake-proof Level 1 corrective and preventive actions

30% - developing strategies and implementing actions to achieve safety, quality, cost, and performance improvement goals; regular application of Lean manufacturing tools and techniques to continuously improve processes

Requirements

A Bachelor's degree in an appropriate discipline and seven (7) years of progressive experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Successful candidates will have direct experience in manufacturing, production and/or production support systems. Candidates must have a demonstrated ability to organize and complete projects, objectives, and tasks. Candidates must be capable of leading a diverse team and collaborating in a cross-functional organization to deliver results. The ability to adapt in a dynamically changing environment is also a necessary skill for this position. Experience working in a bargaining unit environment is also desired. Must be proficient with utilizing Microsoft Office software suite.

US Citizenship required. Must be able to obtain and maintain a U.S. Security Clearance at the appropriate level (U.S. Citizenship required). Must also be able to satisfy federal government requirements for access to government information, and having dual citizenship may preclude you from being able to meet this requirement.

Work Environment/Physical Requirements:

The work environment includes managing resources within a 100,000 class clean room. Smocks, safety glasses, steel-toed shoes are required in these areas. Additional personal protective equipment may be required. The position includes a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting. Work duties also require working in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer.
